Please see this, for it is the real clue to the understanding of the problem of freedom.
Whether in this world of politicians, power, position and authority, or in the so-called spiritual world where you aspire to be virtuous, noble, saintly, the moment you want to be somebody you are no longer free. Vidas Secas? É bastante conhecida uma das mais devastadoras passagens da literatura brasileira: as páginas em que Graciliano narra a agonia e morte da cadela Baleia. Fabiano, que vaga com a família pelo sertão, tangido pela seca, decide matá-la com um tiro para aliviar-lhe o sofrimento. Segue um trecho:
“A carga alcançou os quartos traseiros e inutilizou uma perna de Baleia (...) E, perdendo muito sangue, andou como gente, em dois pés, arrastando com dificuldade a parte posterior do corpo (...). Uma sede horrível queimava-lhe a garganta. Procurou ver as pernas e não as distinguiu: um nevoeiro impedia-lhe a visão. Pôs-se a latir e desejou morder Fabiano. (...) Uma angústia apertou-lhe o pequeno coração. Precisava vigiar as cabras: àquela hora, cheiros de suçuarana deviam andar pelas ribanceiras, rondar as moitas afastadas. (...) A tremura subia, deixava a barriga e chegava ao peito de Baleia. (...) A pedra estava fria. Certamente sinhá Vitória tinha deixado o fogo apagar-se muito cedo. Baleia queria dormir. Acordaria feliz, num mundo cheio de preás (...) gordos, enormes."
